During this project I have been struck the thought that Axbridge Museum’s ancient documents are a metaphor for the process of memory. The information contained in the manuscripts was written on the paper hundreds of years ago however, they are now locked away and no longer readily accessible. This is obviously through no fault of the museum, it is right that the documents are stored and preserved correctly but for an artist who works predominently with the process of memory it provided an excellent opportunity to further my work.
I was lucky enough to be invited to Winscombe Art Group to explore the processes of memory and forgetting by producing artworks relating to the groups memories. The piece of film included here is just one of the groups memories but her frustration at being unable to convey her memories to the page illustrates waste created by lost memories – or documents.
